  5. Thank you for purchasing CyberMedia Oil Change - our newest product for
  6. keeping Windows PC users up-to-date on the latest fixes and improvements
  7. for all their software - via the Internet!

  9. Oil Change is designed to allow you to quickly locate, get information about,
  10. download, and then install updates to the Windows 95 software and hardware
  11. you already own.  Now there is an easy way to keep your computer products
  12. up-to-date without putting in a lot of time tracking down information from
  13. several different manufacturers.  Oil Change does the work - you get the
  14. benefit!

  16. Oil Change identifies the computer products installed on your computer and
  17. then hunts down the latest updates and enhancements available on the Internet.
  18. If any updates are available, Oil Change will then offer to retrieve the new
  19. software and replace the old, obsolete files and configuration settings for
  20. you automatically.  Before deciding to download an update, you can find out
  21. exactly what the update will do for you, described in common, everyday
  22. language.  And whenever possible, Oil Change will back up your existing
  23. software before the update is installed!

  70. You can Undo one update for each product Oil Change updates.  Undo reverses
  71. all the modifications performed during the update.  Oil Change backs up any
  72. files that were copied over or deleted along with any changes to the Windows
  73. Registry.  The Undo safety net even covers shared Windows files.

  76. retrieved and installed with Oil Change.  This allows you to try out an

  101. Oil Change is non-intrusive.  It keeps your sensitive data private.  The
  102. list of products and available updates that Oil Change creates never leaves
  103. your computer!  CyberMedia HelpCentral is a secure database and cannot be
  104. viewed by connecting to the CyberMedia web site - only Oil Change can access
  105. HelpCentral.  Registration information is kept on a secure CyberMedia server.

  108. Accessing the Internet
  109. ----------------------

  111. Oil Change relies on your Internet connection to connect to the CyberMedia
  112. ActiveHelp Server, and to the Oil Change home page.  To use Oil Change to
  113. access the Internet, you must have an Internet connection through a local
  114. network or a modem.  Some networks have an Internet connection that you can
  115. use by connecting to the network - either directly or through dial-up
  116. networking.  If you don't connect through a network, your computer must
  117. have a modem installed.  You can establish an Internet connection through an
  118. Internet Service Provider such as Netcom or Earthlink.  An ISP acts as a
  119. middle man between you and the Internet.  Your computer connects (using your
  120. modem) to the ISP's equipment, which in turn connects to the Internet.  You
  121. may also be connected to the Internet through an online service such as
  122. America Online or CompuServe.

  124. In addition, you must also have a browser.  A browser is software, such as
  125. Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, that allows you to view
  126. text and graphics and download files from web sites.  America Online 3.0 for
  127. Windows 95 and CompuServe Interactive 3.0 both include browsers that are
  128. compatible with Oil Change.

  131. Troubleshooting tips
  132. --------------------

  134. If you get an InstallShield error #42 or error #301 when running the Oil
  135. Change Setup program, the problem may be that your temporary directory is
  136. not configured properly.  To check your current temp environment variables,
  137. open an MS-DOS prompt, type SET, and press Enter.  Write down the directory
  138. or directories that are associated with "TMP=" and "TEMP=".  Please note
  139. that it is common for both of these variables to point to the same directory!
  140. Verify that the directories exist and that they do not contain any files or
  141. subdirectories.  To rectify the install problem if the directories exist,
  142. delete all files and subdirectories in the TEMP and TMP directories and run
  143. SETUP again.  To rectify the problem if the directories do not exist, simply
  144. create the directories.

  146. You may notice that the Setup program performs sluggishly if you have too
  147. many applications running on your PC.  Try closing some applications and
  148. running SETUP again to improve the performance.
  149.  
  150. If Oil Change generates an error message while scanning your system for
  151. applications and drivers, you will need to clear the temporary cache that
  152. Oil Change uses to store information.  To clear the cache, click the More
  153. button on the main Oil Change window and click Options.  Click the Cache
  154. tab and click the Clear button.
  155.  
  156. If you receive an error in the rare case that you wish to uninstall Oil
  157. Change, simply reinstall Oil Change and select the Uninstall Oil Change
  158. shortcut from the CyberMedia Oil Change group on the Start Programs Menu.
  159. Oil Change will be completely removed from your system.

  161. If you receive an error message when trying to connect to the CyberMedia
  162. server, please verify that you are currently connected to the Internet.

  164. Oil Change uses the Internet not only to download updates, but to let Oil
  165. Change users register with CyberMedia and subscribe to the full version of
  166. Oil Change.  If you've been using a browser on the Internet, you know that
  167. problems typically occur when you attempt to connect to a site or download
  168. files.  These same problems can occur when Oil Change accesses the Internet.
  169. Usually, problems are temporary and are caused by heavy network or
  170. internetwork traffic, or a server that is temporarily down for maintenance.
  171. If Oil Change alerts you to a problem with connecting to a site, wait a short
  172. time before trying again.  In the case of a very popular update, you may have
  173. to try several times before Oil Change successfully connects to the required
  174. site.  If an update takes an unusually long time to download, you can cancel
  175. the update and try again later.
